Hlumelo Lima Farm Ecology Products

Hlumelo Lima Farm uses a minimum-till farming philosophy. This means we avoid ploughing and utilise crop residue and cover crops as a nutrient-rich and water-preserving mulch. We also use reduced chemicals and manage produce through a precise system of soil sampling, fertilisation and spraying, and water management. We are growing goodness from the ground up.

When the baby greens are ready for harvest, timing and temperature rule the day. And at the perfect moment, the race begins. During the hotter summer months, Earthbound Farm laborers start their day at 3 a.m., harvesting the baby leaves before the temperature reaches 80 degrees, at which point the leaves become too soft to pick. Stan Pura, director of farm operations and one of Earthbound Farm's partners, designed a unique baby-lettuce harvester that picks easily-torn baby greens quickly and consistently. Working in a pattern of overlapping rings, eight people variously direct and drive the machine and put the mechanically picked greens into plastic totes. The harvesting machine has a continuous looping blade that goes through a sharpener with each rotation. After the machine cuts the leaves, it blows them onto a mesh grid that allows small leaves and rocks to fall through.

The Crops

At Hlumelo Lima Farm, our crops of maize, soya beans, potatoes, and wheat are a by-product of a commitment to conservation agriculture. Our lands are limed and planted in rotation to improve the organic material content in the soil. With the good rainfall in the Eastern Cape, dryland is made viable through water-conscious farming. Where irrigation is required, water probes are used to monitor water being drawn along with weather forecasts and crop growth stages. This all goes into determining when and how much to irrigate. Our input has a marked effect on our outputs; with goodness going into the ground, we get a great-tasting and high-quality product out of the ground. We consistently supply large yields of nutritious, sustainable food for export and local markets alike.
